In November 2007, the Colombian army captured FARC rebels who were carrying videos, photographs, and letters of about 15 hostages, some who have been held in jungle camps by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, for nearly ten years. The Marxist-inspired FARC—the largest rebel group in Latin America—has been waging guerilla wars against the Colombian government for 40 years. Hostages included three American military contractors and Ingrid Betancourt, former Colombian presidential candidate. Also in November, Uribe withdrew his support of Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez’s attempts to negotiate with the FARC, escalating tension between the two countries. Chávez subsequently withdrew the Venezuelan ambassador to Colombia.

When the world famous explorer Christopher Columbus 1498 made his third voyage to America he discovered this island. He baptized the island “La Margarita”, the Greek word for “Pearls” since he noticed that the seabed was laden with pearls.

The legend says that there once upon time existed pearls big as eggs from a dove on this island.

The name was later changed by the Spanish monarchs to Isla de Margarita to honour the princess from Austria who was to marry the Spanish Prince Don Juan.

Today the revenues from the pearls have been replaced by the industry of tourism. Because who can resist totally 50 high qualitative beaches scattered along a 106 miles of coastline?

(Local Name: Salto Angel) Falling almost a kilometer, Angel Falls is the star attraction of Canaima National Park. At 979 m it is the highest waterfalls in the world. The best time to see the falls is during the rainy season, between May and November. During the dry season the falls may be little more than a trickle which turns to mist by the time it reaches the bottom.

The falls are usually visited by either a sightseeing flight or a 3 day boat trip beginning in the town of Canaima. Visitors must fly into Canaima as there is no road access. The boat trip may not be possible during the dry season due to low water levels in the river.

The official name for Cuba is Republic of Cuba. In Spanish it is known as Republicia de Cuba. It consists of the Island of Cuba, the Isle of Youth and some adjacent small islands. The Island of Cuba is the largest of the Greater Antilles. Cuba is located at the confluence point of the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. To the south is Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. Cuba is west to the Turks and Caicos Island and Haiti. It is to the east of Mexico. It is also south to the eastern United States and the Bahamas. The island of Cuba is the seventeenth largest island in the world by land area. Here are some interesting facts about Cuba.

Cuba is the most populated country in the whole of the Caribbean. The main island of Cuba is surrounded by four other main groups of islands. The four islands are the Carnaguey, the Canarreos, the Jardines de la Reina and the Colorados. The total land area of Cuba is 110,860 kilometers square. The main island of Cuba consists of rolling plains. It has a range of steep mountains at its southeast end, called the Sierra Maestra. The highest point in Sierra Maestra is the Pico Real del Turquino at around two thousand and five meters (2005 mtrs). The capital of Cuba is Havana.

The climate in Cuba is tropical. It is moderated by trade winds. There is a dry season from November to April and has a rainy season from May to October. The average temperature is twenty one degrees Celsius in January and twenty seven degrees Celsius in July. Cuba is home to hurricanes and destructive storms since it lies on the path of violent weather. These hurricanes are most common in September and October.

Cuba has a mixed population, with one percent Chinese, eleven percent black, thirty seven percent white and a major fifty one percent being mixed black and white, mulatto. The female population is 5,580,500 while the male population is around 5,597,233. The birth rate of Cuba at 9.88 births per thousand is one of the lowest in all of the Western Hemisphere. The population rate has stopped in the last few decades, though the total population has increased from seven million to around twelve million since the sixties.

1) The United Mexican States are a federation whose government is representative, democratic and republican based on a presidential system according to the 1917 Constitution. The constitution establishes three levels of government: the federal Union, the state governments and the municipal governments. All officials at the three levels are elected by voters through first-past-the-post plurality, proportional representation or are appointed by other elected officials.
2) All elected executive officials are elected by plurality (first-past-the-post). Seats to the legislature are elected by plurality and proportional representation at the federal and state level.[44] The Chamber of Deputies of the Congress of the Union is conformed by 300 deputies elected by plurality and 200 deputies by proportional representation with closed party lists[45] for which the country is divided into 5 electoral constituencies or circumscriptions.[46] The Senate is conformed by a total of 128 senators: 64 senators, two per state and the Federal District elected by plurality in pairs; 32 senators assigned to the first minority or first-runner up (one per state and the Federal District), and 32 elected by proportional representation with closed party lists for which the country conforms a single electoral constituency.
3)According to the constitution, all constituent states must have a republican form of government composed of three branches: the executive, represented by a governor and an appointed cabinet, the legislative branch constituted by a unicameral congress and the judiciary, also called a Supreme Court of Justice. They also have their own civil and judicial codes.
4)The PRI held an almost hegemonic power in Mexican politics since 1929. Since 1977 consecutive electoral reforms allowed opposition parties to win more posts at the local and federal level. This process culminated in the 2000 presidential elections in which Vicente Fox, candidate of the PAN, became the first non-PRI president to be elected in 71 years.

In 1993, Puerto Rico celebrated the 500th anniversary of its discovery by Colombus. Settled by explorer Juan Ponce de Leon, the Island was a Spanish possession for over four centuries. Puerto Rico came under United States sovereignty by thr Treaty of Paris signed on December 10, 1898, terminating the Spanish-American War. Puerto Ricans have been US citizens since 1917. In July 1950, the US Congress enacted Public Law 600. It provided that existing laws which defined the political, economic, and fiscal realtionship between Puerto Rico and the United States should remain in full force. It also authorized Puerto Rico to draft and approve its own Constitution, which took effect on July 25, 1952. Puerto Rico's relationship with the US is referred to as commonwealth status.
